Christians: Do you observe the pagan customs of Christmas, or do you purge them?
Since the timing of Christmas (Dec 25th) comes from a Roman solstice/sun-worshiping holiday (the day they believe the sun was “reborn”), the customs of caroling/gift-giving/feasting/merriment come from the Roman Saternelia festival, the custom of the “Yule-log” comes from the ancient Germanic/Scandinavian festival of Yule, the image of Santa and his flying reindeer at least in part from the image of Odin riding through the sky on his yearly Great Hunt, the custom of bringing a tree into the home in winter from ancient European nature-worshiping pagans who brought evergreen trees and branches inside to remind them of greener seasons, and the gold/silver bulbs as decorations symbolizing the sun… do you reject them as part of your Christian celebration? Do you reject the holiday altogether, as a pagan-derived festival which the Bible never instructs Christians to observe?
Though other people may certainly do as they please, I reject the holiday altogether — as well as all of the other traditions of Man which are intended to replace the things of God. Such other traditions of Man include, but are not limited to: St. Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Lent, Good Friday, Easter, All Hallows’ Eve, All Saint’s Day, etc.
It also includes the observance of Sunday as a rest day, the eating of blood and animal fat, the eating of unclean flesh foods, the drinking of alcohol, the ingesting of harmful chemicals such as tobacco and caffeine, and any tolerance of sexual promiscuity, homosexuality, and pornography.
Instead, I seek to know God’s full Law and to do it — as requested by Jesus Christ (which means observing God’s Sabbath and God’s Feast days). Such things are not because I think they will earn my salvation. No, no. Jesus Christ is my only Salvation. But, because Jesus Christ has saved me, I love Him so much that I desire to do as He has asked (Mat. 5:48) — and He asks no more of me than He required of Himself (John 15:10).
